Utamaduni summer camp ends

The four members representatives from Bujora Cultural Centre has ended their visit at summer camp 2015 with a wonderful Dance Performance. They will get a chance to visit other dance troupes in Denmark and Sweden before their departure back home.

Cultural expedition to Denmark

Today. the 10.th of july, four representatives from Sukuma Museum, Bujora, arrived at Billund airport in Denmark.

Sikukuu ya ngoma

At august 12. there were a great gathering of tradutional drum-dance groups at Bujora Sukuma Museum. The day was marking the ending of a visit from Denmark, by the Utamaduni Dance Troupe. 8 members of the danish friendship-dance troupe was invited by wanasesilia dance society to visit Bujora, and 3 different villages; Ngogo, Mwasubuya and Isesa. In all 3 villages there were arranged shindano (dance competition) with local groups. And this time in a way that the shindano always ended with a collaboration where alle groups met and danced for and with eachother. At august 12. all groups were invited for at ‘farewell party’ to the guest, and a gathering and exchange of dances, drum rhythms and beautiful songs.

Shilungu is a song about the loss of cultural identity. It reminds people where they come from and how to reconnect with traditional culture. Shilungu (a shell) is one of the symbols of Sukuma culture. The song is in Kisukuma, the language of the Sukuma tribe in Tanzania. Filmed in Bujora Mwanza with Mzee James Sombi, father of John Sombi.
